CH Araby's Shortstop SOM
1975-1991
Shortstop shown with Peter Delano who finished him in 6 shows.“Shortstop” was a dream come true dog. He was not only a consummate show dog but he was a marvelous companion and true ambassador for the Boxer breed. Until the day he died he never lost that wonderful spark and zest for life.
A few of his accomplishments are listed on this page but my most cherished memory of Shortstop or “George Top” as Kimberly Steele called him was at the 1988 ABC Parade of Champions. We were there at the show with Shorts in the motor home. He was not entered in the parade because we felt, at age 13, he did not need to try to get around that big ring. When ABC officials found out he was still alive at age 13 they asked us to please show him off. So a very tearful and happy reunion between Gary Steel and Shortstop took place at ringside. As soon as that “Old Campaigner” saw Gary he was ecstatic. He knew his job was to be on for Gary and the crowd. So one very white old Boxer went around that huge ring like a locomotive, all the while nodding from side to side to the cheering crowd the entire way around the ring! I am not sure there was a dry eye in the room that day. Shortstop had such heart and ring presence!
Shortstop was humanely put to sleep at over 15 years of age when he fell on the ice, dislocating his shoulder in an inoperable way. I think he may have lived for ever, but he does live on in my heart and in the significant impact he has had on the Boxer breed. Many of today’s top show dogs and producers can trace their roots back to him through kennels such as Berlane, Telstar, Glenroe, Rummer Run and others. Ch Bridgewood BK Kahuna SOM LOM is a notable example of a dog whose pedigree is linebred back on Shortstop.
All of Araby Boxers today trace back to careful linebreedings on Shortstop through his male offspring –Ch Bropat’s Red Alert of Asgard SOM, Indian Bend’s Swiss Mocha, Ch Araby’s Black Watch SOM and the bitches, Araby Sweetheart On Parade, Ch. Indian Bend’s Buffalo Gal.
